Usage tips
- Always use a series resistor for the LED: R = (Vin - 1.2 V) / IF. With 5 V and about 10 mA use 330-390 Ω; with 3.3 V and about 5 mA about 390 Ω.
- Output to a microcontroller: emitter (pin 3) to ground and a 4.7-10 kΩ pull-up resistor between the collector (pin 4) and the supply of the second circuit. The signal is inverted: LED on = output low.
- Do not connect the grounds of the two circuits together, or the isolation is lost.
- Suitable for slow signals, PWM up to a few kHz and mains detection; high-value pull-ups slow down switching. Fast communication needs high-speed optocouplers.
- If the input signal can reverse, protect the LED from reverse voltage (6 V max), for example with an anti-parallel diode.
